Members of the Ladies Golf League at Prince William Golf Course on Vint Hill Road teed off yesterday, May 1, the first day of the league’s 29th season.
Players of all skill levels are “absolutely” welcome, according to Erin Nieder, league president. “Our nine-hole handicaps range from 9 to 36,” she said.
The league plays from the first Wednesday in May until the last Wednesday in October, with tee times every eight minutes starting at 4 p.m. In the fall, tee times change to start at 3:30 p.m. because of limited daylight.
A tee time sign-up sheet is posted in the clubhouse a week in advance.
About every three weeks, the ladies league usually has a special game or competition. “Could be a scramble, play with only four clubs, closest to the pin on a par three, Joker’s wild, play to your handicap and plant your flag, best net ball… they’re just silly games to entertain us on occasion. We give everybody directions on how to play each time we do one,” explained the league president.
Statistics are tracked each week. “You’ll record on your scorecard, if you drive the fairway, how many putts you have, if you make the green in regulation, and your score. It goes into a box in the clubhouse when you finish play, and Millie, our statistician, puts it all into a giant spreadsheet. At the end of the year, we divide the league into three flights and award prizes for a bunch of things based on the statistics. There are also prizes for the games, said Nieder.
Registration was held April 24, but is open all season long, Nieder said.
A number of the women golfers walk and those that do get a break on the weekly fee. League members pay dues of $35 a year.
Some members just play golf while others participate in the games and competitions. “It’s a very relaxed league,” said Nieder.
