Annual Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt April 20-21

Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 4th Annual Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt, scheduled for April 20-21. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia (WFV) are coordinating this annual event.

“The goal of the Old Dominion One Shot is to bring together people and businesses that have a passion for this great sporting heritage. Building partnerships like this is vital to connecting people to the outdoors, and for inspiring a sustainable, long-term funding effort that will benefit all wildlife in Virginia,” said Bob Duncan, Executive Director of DGIF.

The event will kick off Friday April 20th, at Bass Pro Shops in Ashland, with hunters and guides pairing up and planning their hunting strategy. Hunters and guides will hunt until noon on Saturday in spectacular locations throughout Virginia, hoping to walk away with an award-winning gobbler.

Festivities will conclude Saturday night with a celebration in downtown Richmond at the NewMarket Pavilion. To get more information about the celebration, go to http://www.vaoneshot.com .

This year’s event included an essay contest for youth hunters, ages 15 and under. A record-breaking 32 essays were submitted. Not only will the five lucky winners receive a free guided hunt during One Shot, they also will be awarded a lifetime hunting license. This year’s top-five winners include James Daniel of Amelia, Matthew Alfieri of Clifton, Alec Smith of Kingsport, Tenn., Colton Josselyn of King George, and Aaron Hill of Big Stone Gap.

The judges for the essay contest were Tee Clarkson, Virginia Shepherd and Ken Perrotte.

“The One Shot brings a lot of passionate people together—hunters with a deep-rooted love of the sport, landowners with strong connections to their land who want to share an experience, and seasoned guides who recognize the importance of nurturing and promoting hunting and an appreciation of the outdoors. They embody what WFV and DGIF do, and why we do it,”  Jenny West, Executive Director of WFV, was quoted as saying in a news release.

Proceeds from the 2018 Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt will be used to promote hunting opportunities across Virginia.
