Head football coach Sean Finnerty of Liberty High School in Bealeton named “Coach of the Week”

The Washington Redskins announce that head football coach Sean Finnerty of Liberty High School in Bealeton, Va. has been named the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of Oct. 27.

A veteran of eight seasons, Finnerty began his coaching career with Liberty in 2006. After serving as Freshman Coach, Finnerty was promoted to Varsity Offensive Line Coach in 2007, and then Head Coach in 2012. Finnerty’s Eagles are 8-1 this season, following a 7-5 season in 2013 and an appearance in the regional semifinal game.

Prior to his time with Liberty, Finnerty was the Assistant Football Coach at Punxsutawney High School (Pa.). Finnerty graduated from Clarion University, where he was a four-year starter at offensive lineman.

Dean Spahr, director of student activities at Liberty High School, explains that Finnerty is dedicated to developing his student-athletes beyond the scope of football.

“Whether it’s coaching or in the classroom, Coach Finnerty provides great instruction and positive reinforcement,” said Spahr. “He strives to help his student-athletes become valuable members of the community after their high school careers.”

Finnerty has taken his student-athletes to a local farm past two seasons to help cultivate the land for crops, which are then donated to local food shelters. Finnerty is a teacher in the Social Studies department at Liberty.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Each week during the 2014 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach’s continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden and Redskins President and General Manager Bruce Allen.
