You don’t have to be a runner, high jumper, swimmer or tennis player to participate in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.
NVSO chairman David Jerome of Burke says, “Many events such as scrabble, Mexican Train dominoes, yo-yo tricks, duplicate bridge, cribbage, horseshoes, Wii bowling, bunco and new this year, American style Mah Jongg, require a great deal of mental effort and afford seniors an opportunity to compete, meet new friends and possibly win a gold medal.”
The 2014 NVSO will be held Sept. 13-24 at 19 venues throughout Northern Virginia. More than 50 events are open to adults 50+ years of age living in a sponsoring jurisdiction. NVSO is sponsored by the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier and Prince William.
Other NVSO events are track and field, swimming, diving, cycling, tennis, table tennis, golf, miniature golf, ten pin bowling, eight ball pool, volleyball, pickleball, men’s basketball, handball, racquetball, badminton, bocce and team line dancing. Participants can register online at http://www.nvso.us or by mail. Registration fee is $12 which covers multiple events.
Gold Patron sponsors of NVSO are Jim Koons Automotive Companies, Leisure World of Virginia, Ryan Homes of Northern Virginia, Ashby Ponds, Greenspring Retirement Community, Safeway, Humana, Goodwin House Incorporated, The Virginian, Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia, Westminster at Lake Ridge, Falcons Landing and Walgreens.
