On Saturday, April 21, the Asaph Dance Ensemble will appear on the Merchant Hall stage at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Prince William campus of George Mason University in Manassas at 7:30 p.m. for the ensemble’s spring dance concert.
This will feature Spring and Summer, from Vivaldi’s Seasons and The Prodigal Son, from the Bible. The concert has been choreographed by Robert Sturm (The Prodigal Son) and Robin Conrad Sturm (Spring and Summer), co-directors of the Asaph Dance Ensemble.
The Asaph Ensemble consists of professional dance artists as well as auditioned dancers from the Sturms’ Northern Virginia Dance Academy in Manassas, now in its 20th year.
Sturm has another artistic side to her as well. She is a fabric artist, designing and making all the costumes for the Asaph Ensemble’s productions. She says she uses “big seams,” so as to let out or take in seams for different-sized dancers.
Robin Conrad Sturm was a principal dancer with the Washington Ballet, of which she was a founding member. She has been on the ballet faculty at the Washington School of the Ballet and the American University in Washington, D.C.
Robert Sturm holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater from Indiana University and a Masters degree in Performing Arts/Dance from American University, where he was named “Most Outstanding Graduate” by the Washington Performing Arts Society.
He was a guest soloist with the Washington Ballet and was a principal dancer and choreographer with Choreo 18.
Robert Sturm and Robin Conrad Sturm were the founding directors of the Masterworks Festival that has become one of the nation’s largest summer programs for classical music and dance.
