Merrymaking at Thomas Jefferson’s private retreat near Lynchburg on the weekend before July 4

Celebrate the 243rd anniversary of American Independence at the cherished private retreat of the man who wrote the Declaration! Visitors of all ages are invited to join Poplar Forest for a celebration that would intrigue Jefferson himself. The merrymaking begins with the presentation of 1776—a spirited musical comedy that brings the Second Continental Congress to life and captures the spirit of the year that changed the world—in three performances beginning on Thursday, June 27. The celebration continues on Independence Day with a grand Early American-style fair featuring entertainment and activities for the entire family, including a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence at 1:30 p.m.

Theatre al fresco returns to Thomas Jefferson’s south lawn with a special presentation of 1776—the Tony Award-winning musical comedy by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone based on the events leading up to the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence—directed by John Holt. Revel in the revolutionary spirit of America’s Founding Fathers, get acquainted with Ben (Franklin), Richard Henry (Lee), John (Adams) and Tom (Jefferson) and celebrate their brilliant contributions to our country’s history.

Bring your friends and family, and a picnic dinner, sample a selection of local libations and enjoy an evening of theatre under the stars. Admission to 1776 is $17.76 for adults (ages 18+); $13 for youth (ages 6-17 and college); and $4 for children (ages 5 and under). Reservations are suggested.
