Retrace August 30, 1862 Civil War battle in Manassas on walking tour led by historian John Hennessy

Civil War buffs will be able to retrace a noted Civil War battle that occurred in Manassas on the afternoon of August 30, 1862 during an April 14 walking tour at Manassas National Battlefield Park (Va. 234 and US 29) led by historian John Hennessy. This walk in the steps of history is being sponsored by the Manassas Battlefield Trust at $30 for members and $45 for non-members. The 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday morning tour will cover a distance of about two miles, a news release said.

Here’s the background: The failed Union attack at the Deep Cut that left Federal forces in disarray. Before they could recover, 28,000 Confederates under General James Longstreet delivered a crushing counter-assault to the disorganized Union left flank, sealing another Confederate victory on the Manassas battlefield.

The tour will follow Longstreet’s assault from Groveton to Chinn Ridge and conclude on Henry Hill. Registered participants should meet at the Visitor Center Parking lot at 8:45 a.m. This hike will follow Longstreet’s men on that fateful afternoon—the largest simultaneous mass assault of the war. Hikers are advised to wear sturdy shoes; take water and a snack; and wear bug repellent.
