Master Gardeners may be volunteers, but they’re a pro when it comes to just about all things gardening. They know about insects, plants, plant diseases, soils, pest and nutrient management, pesticide safety, vegetables, weeds and wildlife, and they can help people get greener, heathier lawns. And they are looking for other people who may be interested in knowing about these things, too.
The Master Gardener program, hosted by the Prince William Virginia Cooperative Extension, is looking for volunteers who want to learn and become experts on gardening, said extension Master Gardener Coordinator Nancy Berlin.
The first step in becoming a Master Gardener is attending an information session to learn all about the “dynamic, fun program,” Berlin said.
Following are the locations, dates and times for the free information sessions:
Monday, Aug. 20, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Jean McCoy Conference Room at the Sudley North Government Center at 7987 Ashton Ave.
Tuesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 -8 p.m. in Room 202 in the Development Services Building at 5 County Complex Court.
Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Powell’s Creek Conference Room at the McCoart Government Center at 1 County Complex Court.
Attending one of the information sessions and passing a background check is required to take the Master Gardener course, Berlin said.
To date, the Master Gardener program has assisted with gardens at more than 80 schools, churches, homeowners associations and community centers across Prince William County.
Berlin said becoming a Master Gardener is a good way to get out into gardens to teach and learn. “It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, to get the latest research-based information about gardening and also to give back to the community.”
