Registration is underway for several Youth Mental Health First Aid training sessions to be held this fall in Fauquier County. Each training session can accommodate up to 30 people.
On April 8 Fauquier County Public Schools initiated the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) program which will involve training more than 1,000 school personnel and community members in order to improve mental health literacy – helping them identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness in children and youth.
Each session is an eight-hour training certification course which teaches participants a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual.
The certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments.
