Action in Community Through Service, a private, non-profit organization that cares for people in need in our community, dedicated its new mobile computer lab during a ceremony Jan. 15 at ACTS’ headquarters in Dumfries.
Julie Moessner, Program Manager for Emergency Assistance recognized the significant contribution of Gina Reyes and the Lake Ridge Lions Club in making the lab a reality. During the ceremony, the lab was dedicated in honor of Mrs. Reyes who passed away early last year.
ACTS mission is to provide relief, foster hope and promote self-sufficiency for Prince William area neighbors in crisis due to hunger, homelessness and personal violence.
Programs include Client Support Services (Emergency Assistance and Food Pantry), Housing Services, Sexual Assault Victims Advocacy Service (SAVAS), and Turning Points, the domestic violence intervention program. ACTS also manages a well-stocked Thrift Store in Dumfries.
The computer lab dedication was attended by the family of Gina Reyes, many of her fellow Lions, colleagues, friends, as well as the staff and supporters of ACTS.
Tom Benjamin, ACTS Director of Development, noted that Gina Reyes had asked him what he needed to “change lives.”
His response was the seed that led to the procurement of the mobile computer lab. The lab includes seven laptop computers, multiple software programs, and a storage unit.
Moessner reported that the lab has already been used in the development of computer skills, financial education modules, a resume workshop, and will continue to be used for the education and training of ACTS clients. Benjamin is currently working on funding grants that will sustain the lab and broaden its utility for future programs.
