New Dominion Choraliers to present spring concert with guest groups on March 28

Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Franz Schubert’s Mass in G Major with the New Dominion Choraliers of Prince William County as the group presents “A Musical Collaboration: From Schubert to the American Songbook!”

The performance will be on Saturday, March 28,at 7:30 P.M. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas.

Under the direction of Katherine Nelson-Tracey, the Choraliers will present this beautiful composition with special guests, the Stafford Regional Choral Society and the Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra.

Each chorus will also delight attendees with a tapestry of wonderful melodies from Broadway and the American Songbook.

“Schubert wrote the beautiful sacred arrangement for his Mass in G in less than a week in March of 1815, shortly after his 18th birthday,” Nelson-Tracey was quoted as saying in a news release.  “This is the second of his six Masses, and it’s revered for its simplicity, and for its expression of the personal nature of religious contemplation,” she added.

“The Mass is comprised of six movements—Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei—whose enchanting melodies provide this religious composition with a heavenly devotional mood.  Originally requiring the accompaniment of only a string orchestra and organ, the short, beautiful choruses are among the most accessible and classical of Schubert’s choral compositions.”

The Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra will open the concert with the “Beethoven Egmont Overture.”

Completed in 1810, the overture is Beethoven’s celebration and exaltation of the heroic sacrifice of one man—Count Egmont—who was condemned to death for having taken a valiant stand against oppression and religious persecution in the 16th century.

The ‘collaboration’ continues as the Stafford Regional Choral Society sings an array of pop tunes, such as “Splish Splash”, “Rockin’ Robin”, “Sh Boom”, and a 1950s medley that includes “Jailhouse Rock/Who Put the Bomp/Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Rock Around the Clock.”

The New Dominion Choraliers, voted the “Best Performing Arts Group” 2014 in Prince William County, will then regale you with a musical tour of Broadway, full of popular works from famous productions.

Choraliers’ President, Steve Hein, also announced that NDC will continue its support of the charitable work of Trevor’s Treasures by collecting unwrapped toys and donations in the lobby at the concerts.  “Trevor Blake,” he explained, “was a local boy who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of five.
