Former Tonight show bandleader at Hylton Center in Manassas Feb. 20

Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and former “Tonight Show” bandleader Doc Severinsen will be teaming up with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra to present an evening of high flying jazz music at two performing arts venues in Manassas and Fairfax Feb. 20-21.

Severinsen first will be at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 at 8 p.m.

Then he’ll play a performance at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at 8 p.m.

Pre-performance discussions, free to ticketholders will be held 45 minutes prior to each performance in the Buchanan Partners Art Gallery at the Hylton Center and Grand Tier III at the Center for the Arts (sponsored by the Friends of the Center for the Arts).

The fashionable Doc Severinsen graces the stage with vibrancy, flair and a smooth sound that never goes out of style.

Severinsen served as the music director and bandleader of “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” for almost 30 years. Within a week of Johnny Carson’s final telecast on May 22, 1992, Doc and his band hit the road, and more than two decades later, they are still bringing their incredible musicianship and the iconic big band sound to audiences across the globe.

Severinsen has released more than 30 albums, most recently, “Oblivion,” the latest collaboration with guitarist Gil Gutierrez, with whom he now tours in a group called The San Miguel Five, named for San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, where Doc now resides.

Joining Doc Severinsen and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra onstage is Kansas City-based soprano Vanessa Thomas who has showcased her seamless 4-octave range and impressive versatility in previous performances with Severinsen and his big band, as well as with Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Lyric Opera Kansas City and Chattanooga Symphony.

In addition to serving as the artistic director of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Jim Carroll’s illustrious career includes performances at Carnegie Hall, the White House, the Kennedy Center, Royal Albert Hall and the Apollo Theatre.

A versatile performer and alto sax virtuoso, Carroll has performed with Michael Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Taylor, Woody Herman and His Thundering Herd, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and many others. Active as an educator, Carroll is the director of Jazz Studies in the School of Music at George Mason University.
