This revered choir featuring 12 gifted male vocalists displays its awe-inspiring mastery of more than a thousand years of vocal literature by performing ancient hymns and venerated sacred songs, contemporary works and a selection of festival American and European carols and gospel spirituals.
Hailed by the New Yorker as “the world’s reigning male chorus,” Chanticleer has enchanted audiences across the globe with glorious voices, rapturous sound, impeccable technique and an astonishing repertoire spanning everything from Gregorian chant and Renaissance music to jazz, gospel and contemporary sounds.
Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by the late tenor Louis Botto. Now in its 37th season, the San Francisco-based ensemble has performed for countless audiences across the globe and has released numerous recordings, including two Grammy Award-winning albums, “Colors of Love” and “Lamentations and Praises.”
Chanticleer’s flourishing education programs, which include Youth Choral Festivals™, a nationwide program that involves more than 5,000 young people annually, and the Louis A. Botto (LAB) Choir, an afterschool program for high school and college students, have earned the ensemble the Chorus America Education Outreach Award; Chanticleer’s educational initiatives have also been the subject of a documentary titled “The Singing Life.”
Chanticleer is composed of sopranos Nathanael Pence, Kory Reid and Darita Seth; altos Cortez Mitchell, Alan Reinhardt and Adam Ward; tenors Michael Bresnahan, Brian Hinman and Ben Jones; and baritones and basses Eric Alatorre, Matthew Knickman and Marques Jerrell Ruff.
