Rick Davis and Tom Reynolds promised some “extras” along the way when they unveiled the 2013-14 lineup for the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. And here’s the first one. HPAC will welcome The Charlie Daniels Band to its Merchant Hall stage on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m. Country artist Red Marlow is the opening act.
Few artists truly embody the Southern sound quite like Charlie Daniels, who has left an indelible mark on the American musical landscape throughout his multi-platinum career with exciting forays into country, Southern rock, gospel and bluegrass music. Charlie Daniels has been a driving force behind the Southern rock movement for more than five decades.
The North Carolina native was a bluegrass musician before moving to Nashville in 1967, where he quickly made a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer, penning a tune for Elvis Presley and playing on landmark albums such as Bob Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline.”
Daniels released his self-titled solo debut on Capitol Records in 1970, and shortly after he formed The Charlie Daniels Band, thus populating radio with a slew of hits such as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp,” “Still in Saigon” and his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” in which young Johnny displays his musical virtuosity performing a selection of traditional Southern songs in a fiddle-playing match with Satan himself.
With its fiddling fireworks and spectacular “soul-stealing” story, the country music ballad became an instant classic and won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 and the Country Music Association Awards Single of the Year, and was featured on the soundtrack of the hit film, “Urban Cowboy.”
Daniels has amassed numerous accolades throughout his career, including an induction into the Grand Ole Opry and the Musicians Hall of Fame, a star on the Music City Walk of Fame, an Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award, a BMI Icon for songwriting and a Gospel Music Association Dove Award.
Throughout his career, Daniels has used his time and talent as an advocate for many worthy causes, including raising funds for scholarships for veterans, facilities and programs for the severely disabled, cancer research and homes for abused and neglected children.
In addition to Charlie Daniels on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo, the Charlie Daniels Band consists of Charlie Hayward on bass guitar; Bruce Brown on lead guitar; Pat McDonald on drums; Chris Wormer on guitar; and Shannon Wickline on keyboard.
Tickets for The Charlie Daniels Band go on sale to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Program will be announced from the stage
