The Prince William Wildflower Society’s September 15 meeting will feature a program by author and retired biologist Helen Hamilton on Ornamental Native Grasses. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8712 Plantation Lane, Manassas.
Important components of wildflower meadows, the tall stems and feathery seedheads of native grasses furnish an interesting contrast to the home garden. Hamilton’s program will include discussions of common local grasses, how to identify them, and suitable growing conditions.
Hamilton is the co-author of the 2013 field guide Wildflowers and Grasses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain, copies of which will be for sale at the meeting.
She taught biology in public high schools in the Williamsburg area, worked as a plant technician for the National Park Service on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, and is a Master Gardener.
Hamilton is a past president of the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society and program chair for the Williamsburg Botanical Garden.
This meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes awarded.
