Lorin Maazel, a world-renowned conductor and Castleton Festival founder, will be back at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Thursday, July 10 at 8 p.m. to present “Music, Theater, Opera!”
Attendees will have the chance to hear D.C. native Denyce Graves as she joins Maestro Maazel and the Castleton Festival Orchestra to perform a program of lush vocal splendors from the operatic and musical theater repertoire.
Graves, who has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and other prestigious companies, takes audiences on a flight of fancy that blurs the lines between the best of musical theater and the lyrical side of opera, according to Jill Graziano Laiacona,
public and media relations coordinator for the Hylton Center.
Laiacona said Graves is perhaps best known for her title roles in Bizet’s “Carmen” and in Saint-Saëns’ “Samson et Dalila.” She has also enchanted audiences with her impressive repertoire–from German lieder, French mélodie and English art song to popular music from Broadway musicals, jazz and American spirituals.
This is the fourth consecutive summer for the Castleton Festival at the Hylton. The July 10 performance is unique to the Hylton Center and complements the 2014 Castleton Festival events that take place at the Castleton Farms estate this summer through July 20, 2014.
The Castleton Festival, now in its sixth summer season at the Maazels’ bucolic farm estate in nearby Rappahannock County, has received international acclaim for its enormously successful residency program that fosters young artists, advanced students and emerging professionals.
For more than five decades, Lorin Maazel has been one of the world’s most esteemed and sought-after conductors. Formerly the music director of the New York Philharmonic and Spain’s Palau de les Arts “Reina Sofia,” he recently became the music director of the Munich Philharmonic at the start of the 2012-2013 season.
He also guest conducts with many of the world’s leading orchestras. Maestro Maazel and his wife, actress Dietlinde Turban Maazel, established the Chateauville Foundation in 1997 and the Castleton Festival in 2009.
