Volunteers are needed in our community 8/16/13

·      Good morning Prince William – Leesylvania State Park is celebrating our National Day of Service and Remembrance on Saturday September 7th- 10:30-2:30.  This day will support local military families with a relaxing and fun day full of activities for the entire family.  Volunteers are needed for set-up, running activity stations, orienting the families of where the fun is located and of course take down.  Please call Amber at (703) 583-6904.

·      Volunteer Prince William is looking for a volunteer available weekdays to deliver a small disaster preparedness display to Houses of Worship throughout the community on a monthly basis. The churches have requested the display to be delivered and picked up on specific dates.  This display is small and light and very easy!  Please email Bonnie at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more info.

·      National Preparedness Month presents lots of opportunities for groups to help educate your community on being prepared for all kinds of weather and/or man-made disasters.  Volunteers are needed to distribute very informative brochures to neighborhoods, senior living facilities, houses of worship and your friends and family.  This is a great way for your club, office, service organization and scouts to do something important on a beautiful September day.  Please email Bonnie at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for all the specifics

·      Birmingham Green senior living needs volunteers to help serve dinner from 5-7pm every night.  Sounds like great fun- this includes setting tables, rolling silverware, serving beverages and clearing tables.  Please call Zack at (703) 257-6252 to learn more

·      Brain Injury Services has an ongoing need with its technology initiative.  This is includes helping clients with setting up an I Phone, or Microsoft Office programs.  You don’t need to be a super techo just willing to help another be more independent with technology. Two other clients also need volunteers.  One client lives in the Springfield area and would love company to take a walk in the park a couple of times a month.  The other client lives up in the Leesburg area and he needs help with his leather craft business.  This could include finding craft shows to attend and taking him there.  Please call Michelle at (703) 451-8881 ext. 232 to learn more about all three jobs.

·      Fancy Cats Rescue Team has an urgent need for foster families to take adoptable cats and kittens into their homes for 30-60 days to provide the basic care as they prepare to be adopted in their permanent home. This includes love, food, litter and transport to adoption fairs.  Foster homes are also needed for short periods to give a Pet Smart kitty a break from living in the cage.  It continues to be kitten time and your loving home would be a great refuge for these cats.  Please email Alex at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to learn more.

·      Habitat for Humanity is seeking a sign language interpreter to help with a new applicant who has critical home repairs.  The applicant is deaf and disabled.  Come help the Habitat folks help this family with immediate needs.  Habitat would also like to form a bank of interpreters for future reference.  There are also a number of new home repair projects underway in Dale City and Manassas Park. ·      Please visit any Glory Days Grill throughout the community and until September 30th to support the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center. Proceeds from each check will go to this wonderful organization.

·      Prince William County Landfill can take your old electronics every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am-5pm as well as the Balls Ford Compost Facility every 2nd Saturday on the month from 9am-3pm.  Residents may take up to 3 items per visit.  Please dispose of your old electronics responsibly.

·      The Prince William SPCA is looking for a volunteer to do the monthly newsletter. There is a planning committee to help.  Please complete a volunteer sign up form at PWSPCA.org.

·      NVFS Pharmacy Central Program is looking for a volunteer to help scan client files on 2 consecutive weekdays for about 3 hrs each day.  Volunteers must be 18 yrs and complete a background check.  Please call Jan to learn more at (571) 748-2621.

·      BEACON Adult Literacy Program needs volunteers in the Manassas area to teach ESL, adult basic Ed, citizenship and conversation. Classes are Monday through Friday mornings and evenings. Prior experience is not needed as the free training will give you all the skills needed to be successful.  Volunteers may teach either mornings or evenings once or twice a week.  Enjoy your summer and start in the fall.  Please call Caroline at (703) 368-7491 to learn more.

·      The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) needs senior volunteers age 55 and older to provide transportation for a veteran to get to a local doctor’s appt. All vets are referred to us by Aging and you’ll have lots of advance notice for their appts.  It’s also not too early to sign up to tutor kids in grades K-3 in reading and math next school year.  Please call Coleen at (703) 369-5292 ext. 207 for more info.

·      Please mark your calendars for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk on Saturday October 19th in Old Town Manassas.  Volunteers are needed for set-up, staffing tables, handing out literature and monitoring the route.  Please call Sonya at (703) 766-9025 to learn more.
