Gainesville Supervisor Pete Candland will see a swath of Prince William County from an different point of view on Monday, May 27, when he makes a 30-mile cross-county Memorial Day walk to raise funds for charity.
According to his aide Reece Collins, the supervisor has been in training for the walk for about two months, running several miles a day on a treadmill and taking “longer walks” on the weekends. He’s about 15 pounds lighter than when he began training, Collins revealed.
Candland is due to walk from the Hilda Barg Center in Woodbridge beginning at 6:15 a.m., making four stops along the way before finishing at 6 p.m. at Haymarket Town Hall.
The supervisor is scheduled to start at the Hilda M. Barg Center at 14945 Jefferson Davis Highway, Woodbridge, VA 22191. In honor of fallen police officer Chris Yung, Prince William County police officer Greg Pass will walk the entire route with Candland, With them on the first leg of the journey is slated to be Occoquan Supervisor Michael May.
In 2 hours and 20 minutes the supervisors and the police officer are to walk seven miles to arrive at 8:35 a.m. at the James J. McCoart Administration Building (Connaughton Plaza), 1 County Complex Ct., Woodbridge, VA 22192.
Collins said the Gainesville supervisor is planning to have two pairs of shoes and “at least 6 pairs of socks” to get him through the day.
In addition a support vehicle carrying water, food and first aid equipment will traverse the route with the walkers. Several people will be in support roles at various times throughout the day, and “there will always be a support vehicle within a short distance of Pete,” Collins said.
The second leg of the trip is a 9-mile journey starting at 8:55 a.m. from the McCoart Building to arrive at 11:55 a.m. at the Don Bosco Center for Youth Apostles, 9450 Taney Road, Manassas, VA 20110.
After a 50-minute break for lunch, the group is to leave the Don Bosco Center at 12:45 p.m. for the 2-mile walk to arrive at 1:25 p.m. at Northern VA Family Service / SERVE 10056 Dean Drive, Manassas, VA 20110
At 1:45 p.m. they will depart Northern VA Family Service, SERVE headed for the Western Prince William County Police Station, 8900 Freedom Center Blvd, Manassas, VA 20110 at 2:25 p.m., a distance of 2.5 miles.
Candland and Pass are due to leave the police station at 2:45 p.m. to walk the final and longest leg of the day, 10.5 miles to arrive at Haymarket Town Hall, 5500 Washington St., Haymarket, VA at 6 p.m.
According to information provided by Collins, among the organizations the inaugural “Walk for Prince William” will benefit will be SERVE (Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts), ACTS (Action in Community through Service, Officer Chris Yung Fund, Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center, Azalea Charities, Youth Apostles Institute-Don Bosco Center and L.Cpl. Nick and Samantha Thom (Homes for Our Troops).
Some Candland family members are expected to join him at some rest stops. The supervisor’s personal goal is to raise $10,000 for this inaugural Walk for Prince William, according to Collins.
