Spring Hikes, an annual feature of Manassas National Battlefield Park’s schedule of interpretive programs, will give the public with an opportunity to experience some of the less-visited areas of the battlefield with a park historian.
On Saturday, April 6, visitors are invited to join a park historian for a guided hike focusing on the events of the First Battle of Manassas, fought July 21, 1861. The hike will last approximately four hours and cover 5.5 miles of walking. The hike will take in many sites connected to the battle, including Stone Bridge, Farm Ford, Matthews Hill, Stone House and Henry Hill.
On Saturday, April 20, a park historian will conduct a 6.2-mile hike focusing on the significant events of the Second Battle of Manassas, which took place on August 28-30, 1862. This hike will last approximately 4.5 hours, visiting several key landscapes of the August 1862 battle, including Buck Hill, the Unfinished Railroad, the Deep Cut, New York Avenue, Chinn Ridge, and Henry Hill.
Both spring hikes will begin at 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center at 6511 Sudley Road. These programs will be held rain or shine. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and should bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. The park entrance fee is $3 for adults 16 years of age and over. Manassas National Battlefield Park Annual Passes and National Parks Passes (Interagency Annual, Senior, and Access) are also honored. There is no additional fee for the guided hikes.
