Feature-length movie about heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman to be filmed in Virginia

Focus Features production, Harriet, will film in Central Virginia this fall. It will be the first feature-length film to tell the story of heroic abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman.

Sept. 30 open house at PWC animal shelter: Adoptions, rabies clinic, kids’ activities, photos

The Prince William County Animal Shelter will host its annual Open House on Sunday, Sept. 30, from Noon to 4 p.m. The Shelter is located at 14807 Bristow Road in Manassas 20112. The event includes a rabies clinic from Noon to 3 p.m. that is sponsored by the Prince William Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Bring your dogs and cats to get a rabies vaccine and certificate for just $10 per animal during the times named.

Living history, music and more at Stop #2 Brentsville Day festivities during PWC Farm Tour Sept. 22

Prince William Farm Tour visitors can compare and contrast modern life and 19th century farm life at Stop #2 - Historic Brentsville Courthouse Centre. For the second year, the historic site is combining Brentsville Day festivities with the Western Prince William County Farm Tour on the first day of the Farm Tour, Saturday Sept. 22, according to Bill Backus, site manager.

This is the 18th year of the Western Prince William County Farm Tour and the 17th year Yankey Farms has participated in the Farm Tour, being held this weekend, Sept. 22-23. The farm is located at the corner of Owls Nest and Lonesome Roads off Vint Hill Road in Nokesville.

Noted Civil War civilian historian to speak at Manassas Battlefield Sept. 8

Manassas Battlefield Trust will host noted Civil War civilian historian Juanita Leisch for a free talk on "Armed with the Needles of Necessity" on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. The event will be held at The Theater @ Manassas National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 6511 Sudley Rd., Manassas, VA 20109.

Manassas Ballet Theatre becomes art of the moment in new exhibit at Center for the Arts

Artist Web Bryant spent 12 months "observing, sketching and painting the extraordinary dancers" of Manassas Ballet Theatre as they practiced and performed four ballets. Bryant's works in oils and pastels on the troupe’s 2017-2018 season are now on exhibit until Oct. 31 at Center for the Arts in Old Town Manassas. Meet the artist Sept. 22, 7-9 p.m.

Oct. 20 “Hangar Dance” to raise funds to support Freedom Museum at Manassas Airport

The Freedom Museum will hold its popular Hangar Dance and dinner fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 11 p.m. Admission is $100 per person and includes dinner and dancing to the music of the 1940s and 1950s performed by The Swing Machine.
