Dr. Audrey Scanlan-Teller and Tracey McIntire recounted the experiences of 400-750 women who disguised themselves as men to serve heroically in Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War during a recent program at Central Community Library.

Gainesville District Supervisor Pete Candland will be joining Rise Up Prince William for the 4th Annual Walk for Prince William, a 32-mile walk across the county, on Saturday, May 21. Beginning in Woodbridge and ending in Haymarket, the walk will raise donations for a number of charities along the route. These are Cooperative Council of Ministries, Don Bosco Center, Haymarket Food Pantry, House of Mercy and Traditional Housing BARN.

Soroptimist International of Manassas will mark 60 years on Saturday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the Stonewall Golf Club in Gainesville with a dinner, comedy and magic show, silent auction and raffle to benefit scholarships and grants for women and girls, and to help fund local service projects.
MSO Music Director, James Villani will lead the performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 with 104 players, 18 of whom are students from several area schools. The instrumentation for this massive symphony is also quite different than what is normally heard. There will be nine French horns instead of the usual 2 -4, five different kinds of clarinets, five trumpets, and a reinforced percussion section.
