Prince William Library System staff members are gearing up to start stamping passports and punching cards as children, teens and adults participate in the "Explore – Summer Reading 2017 – Journey through Books" program. Registration for the program begins on June 19 and is free.
A canned goods sculpture contest organized by GFWC Woman’s Club of Manassas will take place on the lawn of the Manassas Museum during the City of Manassas Railway Festival on Saturday, June 3. Following the competition the canned goods will be donated to local community food banks.

Care about animals? SPCA needs volunteer directors. Upcoming events needing volunteers include jazz festival in Manassas, health department on Friday mornings, water quality monitoring, feeding the hungry and more.
Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and the Fauquier County Master Gardeners are offering a May 27 presentation on “Using Straw Bales to Grow Vegetables” on Saturday, May 27 at 1 pm at Marshall Schoolhouse #18 Demonstration Gardens, 7592 John Marshall Highway, Marshall (next to the Recycle Center). With no weeding or soil prep, you can grow vegetables anywhere you can fit a straw bale.
You might not expect to see a Prince William County supervisor and a banking association executive in a ballet May 19-21 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.

"We are excited about our summer reading program," said Belinda Tyson, library volunteer program coordinator. "The summer reading program is a non-competitive program that encourages teens and young adults to continue reading during the summer. Our teen volunteers help by explaining how the program work, assist in registering participants and verifying eligibility regarding incentives."
