Crossing Guard Appreciation Day Feb. 14 across Virginia

The Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) has designated Wednesday, Feb. 14, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County. This is a statewide observance sponsored by the Virginia Department of Transportation’s “Safe Routes to School” program, and a way of saying "thank you" to those who help students cross the street or streets safely on their way to and from school.

Updated schedule of Prince William County School Board meetings for February

A regular public meeting of the Prince William County School Board will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21 in the School Board Meeting Room, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. Agendas for School Board meetings may be viewed online. A schedule of meetings is on the School Board web page.

Kate Arnold, PW School Board’s student representative, to hold town hall meetings for students

Kate Arnold, student representative to the PWCS School Board, has scheduled town hall meetings to solicit opinions on school matters from students. Students wishing to speak will be asked to sign in at the beginning of the meeting. Speakers will have three minutes to speak. The first town hall is Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at Battlefield High School.

Nicole Clarke of Old Bridge Elementary: Virginia Mathematics Teacher of Year

Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) has named Nicole Clarke, third grade teacher at Old Bridge Elementary School, the 2018 VCTM William C. Lowry Mathematics Educator of the Year for the elementary school level. She has 19 years experience, is author of "I Can Learn If You Teach Me" and winner of Dale City Civic Association's Multicultural Teacher of the Year Award.

Black history programs Feb. 17, Feb. 24 at Chinn Park and Potomac libraries

Black History Month programs at the libraries will feature a puppet show, stories from black history and black authors and Freedom Quilt squares.

Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is seeking partners to participate in the commonwealth’s Summer Food Service Program to ensure that children have access to nutritious meals during months when school is not in session.

Physical education classes using heart zone monitors to improve learning and health

PE teachers are making classes more engaging with the use of Heart Zone Monitors that give students the chance to see their effort levels. Students wear the monitors on their arm during cardio-respiratory endurance activities, where they can see changes in their heart rate as they participate in class.
