Fire destroys Harvey Road home in Manassas on Jan. 10

Crews arriving on the scene found a single-family dwelling fully involved in flames. After battling weather conditions, the fire was brought under control and extinguished. No one was home at the time. The home was destroyed. No one was injured.

Virginia’s moratorium on uranium mining will stand, appeals court rules

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond ruled on Feb. 17 in favor of the Commonwealth's 30-year moratorium on mining uranium in the Commonwealth. The majority of a three judge panel found that nothing in the federal Atomic Energy Act preempts the state's ability to regulate and restrict conventional uranium mining within its borders, according to a news release from the office of Attorney General Mark Herring.

Va. Court of Appeals upholds ban on display of nooses on private property with intent to intimidate

In a case before the Virginia Court of Appeals, Attorney General Mark R. Herring's office has successfully defended Virginia's statute that bans "displaying [a] noose on property of another or a highway or other public place with intent to intimidate." The Court found that the statute does not violate the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and that display of a noose on private property can still constitute display in a "public place."
