Six historic sites designated as Virginia landmarks

Among the six places recently listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register are a house in Charlottesville designed by Milton L. Grigg, the celebrated architect best known for his work on the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and Monticello in the 20th century; a Danville elementary school featuring architecture representative of mid-20th–century educational trends and their effect on the development of suburbs in Virginia after World War II; and a unique, mid-1700s American frontier–style home in the Shenandoah Valley that grew into a commercial business in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Nominate treasures for Virginia’s Endangered Species list

Museums, libraries, archives, and historic sites across Virginia and Washington, DC many now nominate items from their collections for the Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts (http://www.vatop10artifacts.org) program. This seeks to increase awareness of collections care issues and showcases our diverse histories, cultures, and art, and the important role artifacts play in our collective heritage.

Looters steal Civil War history at Petersburg National Battlefield, National Park Service reports

While Americans this weekend honor citizens who gave their lives in defense of home and country, the National Park Service is investigating looting that took place at a Civil War battlefield earlier in the week, according to a news release from the National Park Service. The affected area of the battlefield is an active crime scene.

Prince William County Bar Association marks 75th year

The PWC Bar Association is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The Association was founded on July 25, 1941 by seven attorneys who comprised the entire legal community at the time, all having offices in Old Towne Manassas.

Retired Army Brig. Gen. Clara Adams-Ender of Lake Ridge rings church’s Freedom Bell

Brig. Gen. Clara Leach Adams-Ender (U.S. Army, Retired) of Lake Ridge, a “Living Legend” of American nursing and a pioneer of military equality, “Let Freedom Ring” March 4, when she visited Williamsburg’s historic First Baptist Church and rang its restored Freedom Bell, silent from the period of segregation until this year.

Santa Train tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23

Tickets to ride the Dec. 12 Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Santa trains go on sale at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23 at http://www.vrespecialevents.org and select vendor locations. In 2014 all tickets sold out online in eight minutes and within 1 ½ hours at vendor locations even though VRE added one more train to the Manassas line and placed restrictions on ticket sales.

Boy Scouts install bin at Balls Ford Rd. site for retirement of Old Glory with dignity and respect

People in the western end of Prince William County now have a convenient, respectable and patriotic way to retire their worn American flags. Boy Scout troops in the Bull Run District constructed a special bin for the collection of the flags at the Balls Ford Rd. compost facility.
