Six historic sites designated as Virginia landmarks

Among the six places recently listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register are a house in Charlottesville designed by Milton L. Grigg, the celebrated architect best known for his work on the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and Monticello in the 20th century; a Danville elementary school featuring architecture representative of mid-20th–century educational trends and their effect on the development of suburbs in Virginia after World War II; and a unique, mid-1700s American frontier–style home in the Shenandoah Valley that grew into a commercial business in the 19th and 20th centuries.

US Senate passes 9/11 National Memorial Trail legislation; now goes to the President for signature

The U.S. Senate has passed H.R. 2278, bipartisan legislation to designate the “September 11th National Memorial Trail”, a trail route linking the National September 11th Memorial and Museum in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Occoquan VFW 20th Anniversary Commemoration of 9/11 on 9/11

This coming Saturday, September 11, Occoquan's VFW Post 7916 will hold a 20th anniversary commemoration of 9/11 in Mamie Davis Park, located at 202 Washington Street in historic Occoquan. The ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Learning encounter with bees Aug. 7 at Rippon Lodge in Woodbridge

During the “Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge,” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 7, visitors to the historic property, at 15520 Blackburn Road in Woodbridge, will have the chance to learn about the history of beekeeping and the intriguing life of bees. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Rippon Historic Site Manager Jessica Alicea.

Events at Manassas National Battlefield Park to mark 160th anniversary of First Battle of Manassas

The 2021 commemoration will take place on the weekend of July 17-18, and on the anniversary of the battle itself on Wednesday, July 21.
