Six historic sites designated as Virginia landmarks

Among the six places recently listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register are a house in Charlottesville designed by Milton L. Grigg, the celebrated architect best known for his work on the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and Monticello in the 20th century; a Danville elementary school featuring architecture representative of mid-20th–century educational trends and their effect on the development of suburbs in Virginia after World War II; and a unique, mid-1700s American frontier–style home in the Shenandoah Valley that grew into a commercial business in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Freedom Museum hosts Japanese group who found remains of Manassas WWII soldier

Usan Kurata and Yukari Akatsuka are members of Kuentai, a Japanese non-governmental group formed in 2006 whose mission is recovering remains of World War II soldiers killed in the Pacific Theater. In 2014, Kuentai-USA was officially formed after American servicemen’s remains were found in 2013. Kurata and Akatsuka live in Japan and recently came to Manassas to meet with local veterans groups to share their mission.

Antioch Baptist to mark 178th anniversary Sept. 27

On Sunday September 27, 2015 Antioch Baptist Church in Haymarket will celebrate its 178th anniversary. The celebration will include guest speakers and musicians in the 11 a.m. service followed by a picnic on the church grounds.

Voting Rights Act 50th Anniversary celebration in Prince William County Sept. 26

Prince William County Human Rights Commission and the Office of Elections, will host a community celebration in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Little Union Baptist Church, located at 17150 Mine Rd. in Dumfries, VA.

NOVA-Manassas invites community to Hispanic Heritage Month activities

The Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (6901 Sudley Road) will host several events in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 17-Oct. 15. Manassas Museum changes policies; entry free starting July 1

Beginning July 1, 2015, admission to the Manassas Museum is free. The Manassas Historic Resources Board, which oversees the Museum’s operations, originated the idea in an effort to allow residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy history for free. City Council approved the measure as well.

Virginia Association of Museums is encouraging museums, libraries, archives, and historic sites across Virginia and Washington, DC to nominate items from their collections for the fifth annual Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts program by June 22.

Look who’s turning 80:  Social Security counting down to its 80th anniversary

Social Security is getting closer to the agency’s historic 80th anniversary and preparing to commemorate the August 14, 1935, signing of the Social Security Act. Acting Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin May 27 announced the agency’s event-filled celebration, with many activities leading up to Aug, 14 and a special website, http://www.socialsecurity.gov/80thanniversary

Honoring the fallen this Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a special day, and a day on which all Americans should honor the fallen. Every day as I drive to work to the U.S. Congress down the George Washington Memorial Parkway, I am reminded of the great sacrifices men and women have made for our country so we can remain free.
