The 2015 FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE Trash Trek Challenge asks students to identify a problem with the way people make or handle trash, and then design a solution to the problem. Fifth graders created a system to put in place at Mountain View School that separates plastic from waste material that can be composted.

"In the Midst of Plenty" was written by author and journalist Ben Bagdikin almost 50 years ago about poverty in America. The subject is still true today. Even in the affluent Haymarket-Gainesville areas, poverty and hunger still exist in the midst of plenty. David and Joan Gifford, along with two teams of volunteers, formed Crossroads-Connection to assist with poverty in their own backyards.

Five PWCS FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams traveled Dec. 4-5 to the FLL State Tournament at James Madison University in Harrisonburg and won an invitation to the State Tournament by being the top in three different judging categories and having success on the field during the robot game.

Four incumbents and four new members will begin four-year terms on the Prince William County School Board terms January 1, 2016. They were sworn in Dec. 10, 2015.

Governor Terry McAuliffe says he will seek a total of $1,074,000 in his proposed biennial budget in order to meet unmet demand and move the Commonwealth closer to ending childhood hunger. This is up from $537,000 for 244 schools in the last budget.

The Fire Department has given the all clear to return to the building. The Fire Department ventilated the building to get rid of the smoke and odor. Lunch schedules will now resume.

Prince William County's preschool program is due to get funds from the K-12 education reform bill that the U.S. Senate passed and sent to the president's desk for signature Dec. 9.

Precautionary evacuation occurred at Gravely Elementary School in Haymarket this morning, Dec. 9, due to a fire alarm signal, according to a media notice from the Prince William County Schools community relations office. Emergency crews are responding. All are safe, the release said.
