Belmont Elementary in Woodbridge celebrated its School of Excellence award and its 50th Anniversary at the same time. Special guests at the event included State Secretary of Education, Atif Qarni; State Senator Scott Surovell; Interim School Board Chairman Babur B. Lateef, M.D.; School Board Member, Alyson Satterwhite (Gainesville); and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Steven Walts.

Zoree Jones, a sophomore at Patriot High School, earned first place and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship in the 2017 Junior Achievement Essay Competition.

Osbourn High School physics teacher Kristine Heaver, who came into teaching in 2012 after a successful career as an environmental engineer in the private sector, is the 2018 Washington Post Teacher of the Year for Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS).

U.S. News & World Report has recognized Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, as 10th in the nation and first in Virginia. The high school which is partially supported by Prince William County taxpayers is in Fairfax but offers a specialized education to students from Prince William County Schools, among others.
