Northern Virginia in running for Amazon’s second North American headquarters

Governor Ralph Northam today, Jan. 18, announced that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has selected Northern Virginia as a candidate for its second North American headquarters. Amazon is seeking a location capable of supporting up to 50,000 employees and a facility that will be around 8 million square feet at full capacity, according to the governor.

Loudoun legislators introduce bill to provide relief from I-66 tolls

Senator Richard Black and Delegate Dave LaRock, both of Loudoun County, today, Jan. 18, announced filing of legislation which would provide toll relief in Northern Virginia. If successful, HB 1489 will reduce tolls on Interstate 66 Inside the Beltway (ITB) and the Dulles Toll Road, according to a news release.

Two PWC Youth Salute students selected to attend National Town Meeting on Tomorrow

OPHS senior Brightney Varghese and Patriot HS senior Jarrett Lash were among 68 students selected to attend the National Town Meeting on Tomorrow (NTMOT) held last fall in St. Louis. The students were selected through the Youth Salute Program to represent Prince William County.

NOVEC and electric co-ops statewide are accepting higher-education scholarship applications

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives are accepting applications for higher-education scholarships from public, private, and home schooled high school seniors who receive electricity from electric cooperatives. Applications for NOVEC's scholarships are due Tuesday, March 13, 2018. VMDAEC applications are due Friday, Feb. 9, 2018. Students may apply for both scholarships.

Va. Tech awarded $1.1 million state grant to develop product aimed at treating brain tumors

Governor Terry McAuliffe announced Jan. 9 that the Virginia Research Investment Committee (VRIC) has approved a $1.1 million grant to Virginia Tech to support a medical device that will use low-energy electric fields to treat brain tumors, the second-leading cause of death in people under the age of 20.

Dr. Megan Healy to join Governor-Elect’s administration as Chief Workforce Development Advisor
