Prince William County will be well represented at the state capitol during the holiday season this year thanks to Frank Chergosky, a member of the Woodbridge Senior Center who carved an ornament to hang on this year's holiday tree in the Executive Mansion in Richmond.

Help is needed with creek cleanup, making a video, administrative tasks, greeting visitors, growing a garden, grant writing, packing, moving & setting up Habitat's ReStore at new location in Manassas and preparing meals over the holidays.

Local community members and/or parents or legal guardians of students who attend Ashland, Bel Air, Coles, Enterprise, King, McAuliffe, Minnieville, Montclair, or Rosa Parks Elementary Schools are needed to volunteer for the “Ferlazzo” Elementary School Boundary Planning Committee.

A total of 154 large bags of trash and 16 bags of recyclables were collected during FOTO's spring Occoquan cleanup at five sites along the river. The volunteers picked up 8 tires, several pieces of lumber boards, 4x4 and 2x4’s, a wooden cross and other building materials.

All 36 Virginia State Parks will offer special programming or volunteer projects related to preserving the environment, recycling, upcycling, developing natural habitats or beautifying parks. Other projects include habitat creation for the threatened Monarch Butterfly, weeding, trail maintenance and plantings.

Volunteers are needed to assist Habitat for Humanity with outdoor work, Brain Injury Services as friendly visitors, Catholic Charities with teaching English and computer skills, Rainbow Riding with a silent auction and decorating and two adult literacy organizations.

Governor Terry McAuliffe announced Nov. 12 that nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Awards. The nomination period ends at 6:30 p.m. January 28.

Volunteers are needed to bag 40,000 pounds of sweet potatoes, to tutor adults who want to learn to read and to hand out fliers and sort donations for SERVE.
