US Sens. Warner & Kaine have asked Congress to fund I-81 upgrades

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) have requested additional funding for vital improvements to Interstate 81 (I-81) to enhance safety and reduce traffic congestion. In letters to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) and the U.S. Department of Transportation, they say more than one-third of all trucks that drive through Virginia travel on I-81, which suffers from traffic delays and 2,000+ crashes annually.

Rep. Wexton introduces gun silencer safety legislation

ongresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) has introduced the Empowering Law Enforcement for Safer Firearm Transfers Act. This bill would enable local law enforcement to block the sale or transfer of any weapon regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), including silencers.

NPS continues work to reopen lane on the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway

The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing to begin construction on a long-term repair of the sinkhole near Dead Run on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Following extensive assessments of the area and of drainage infrastructure that is deep underground, engineers have determined that the NPS needs to replace a 60-year-old brick drainage structure and rehabilitate the pipes leading to that structure.

Kaine introduces federal bill to ban distribution of 3D printed gun blueprints

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) joined Senators Edward J. Markey and Bob Menendez to introduce the 3D Printed Gun Safety Act, legislation to prohibit the online distribution of blueprints and instructions that allow for the 3D printing of firearms.

Single lane reopening May 14 on northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway

At about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, the National Park Service will reopen one northbound lane of the George Washington Memorial Parkway from Virginia Route 123, Chain Bridge Road, to I-495, the Capital Beltway. Drivers should expect delays and watch for workers in the road.

UPDATE: May 13, 11:35 a.m. — Due to continued rain, the National Park Service now hopes to reopen one lane in time for the evening rush hour on Tuesday, May 14. If this schedule changes, we will share an update.
