Va. State Police say report suspicious drone activity to VSP Va. Fusion Center

As of Dec. 18, 2024, the Virginia Fusion Center (VFC), which is located within the Homeland Security Division of the Virginia State Police, says it has received 150+ tips regarding drone activity in the Commonwealth. "All of the tips are being investigated and shared with key stakeholders. We encourage anyone who witnesses a drone flying over critical infrastructure, such as energy installations, or military sites, to contact the Virginia Fusion Center,” said Virginia State Police Special Agent D. Robinson. “This will enable us to work with our partners to determine exactly what is occurring, and how to move forward.”

Glenkirk Rd. in Nokesville to be closed at Vint Hill Road July 24 for tree work

Motorists needing to reach properties along Glenkirk Road will have access; however, access to Glenkirk Road will be via Hamill Run Drive and points northward. Through traffic will be detoured via Vint Hill Road, Rollins Ford Road and Hamill Run Drive back to Glenkirk Road. Drivers are asked to follow posted detour signs.

Va. Senate Committee of educators to review Gov. Youngkin’s “no cell phones in class” plan

Yesterday, Governor Youngkin issued an executive order requiring the Va, Department of Education (VDOE) to issue guidance for school divisions to adopt policies that establish “cell-phone free education” in Virginia Public schools. Today, State Sen. Scott Surovell, Senate Majority leader, asked three Senate Democratic education policy leaders to develop legislation addressing mobile phone use in Virginia’s public schools.

Va. colleges make pact with Youngkin on veterans benefits

Gov. Glenn Youngkin today says that each of the leaders of Virginia’s public colleges and universities, including the chancellor of the Commonwealth’s community college system, has agreed to take all necessary action to ensure no student or prospective student is further adversely impacted by the gap in time from July 1st to when HB 6004 and SB 6012 are passed and signed to fully repeal and reverse the tuition waiver eligibility changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program and other similarly impacted programs.

Gov. Youngkin takes aim at cell phone-free education in Virginia

The Executive Order directs the Virginia Department of Education to initiate a robust public engagement effort with parents, students, teachers, local school leaders and other stakeholders to develop collaboratively policies and procedures that establish the age-appropriate restriction or elimination of cell phone use during instructional time, as well as to establish protocols allowing parents to contact their children in emergency and other important situations.

FEMA to evaluate emergency readiness of North Anna Power Station week of July 15

The US Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that it will evaluate a Biennial Radiological Emergency Preparedness Exercise for communities around the North Anna Power Station in nearby Louisa County. The exercise will occur during the week of July 15, 2024, to assess the ability of Virginia government to respond to an emergency at the nuclear facility.

Liebherr Mining Equipment expanding in Hampton Roads, investing $72.3 million and adding 175 jobs

Liebherr Mining Equipment, an international leader in the production of industrial mining equipment, will invest $72.3 million to expand in the City of Newport News and the City of Hampton. The project will expand manufacturing capabilities and create 175 new jobs.
