SCC moratorium on utility service cut-offs to end Sept. 16

Virginia's State Corporation Commission (SCC) is extending the existing general moratorium on utility shutoffs from Aug. 31 until Sept. 16. The extension gives the General Assembly, currently in special session, additional time to enact any legislation it may choose addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on utility customers, an SCC news release said.

Virginia officials temporarily close Mason Neck State Park in Lorton

Effective immediately, Mason Neck State Park in Lorton north of Woodbridge off US 1 is closed to the public until further notice. Virginia park officials said the park is closed after an employee tested positive for COVID-19. The employee is currently at home in quarantine.

Northam announces $70 million economic recovery fund for 7000 small businesses and nonprofits in Va.

Gov. Ralph Northam has announced $70 million for small businesses and nonprofit organizations whose normal operations were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding will come through Rebuild VA, a new economic recovery fund, and grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to approximately 7,000 applicants to cover eligible expenses.

Free COVID-19 testing by VDH in the City of Manassas May 19-22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Free COVID-19 testing will be available on Wednesday, May 20, through Friday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9608 Grant Ave. (where the new Public Safety facility will be). This is being offered by the Virginia Department of Health for those with symptoms of the virus.

First Spanish-English radio learning program starts in Virginia May 1

Virginia Department of Education is partnering with Radio Poder WBTK 1380 AM — a Richmond Spanish-language station — to launch “Virginia: Educación en Radio,” the commonwealth’s first bilingual radio learning program, according to James Lane, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Virginia: Educación en Radio” will feature prerecorded lessons in multiple subject areas to support continuity of learning for Spanish-speaking students in grades K-12 while schools are closed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
