Save Our Homes Alliance to address Manassas City Council on housing issues Nov. 28

On Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, Save Our Homes Alliance will address the Manassas City Council about concerns over the eviction of 40+ families from the East End Mobile Home Park. The Alliance is comprised of East End homeowners, Manassas residents and supporters countywide. The Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm with citizens time at 7:30 pm.

Wreath laying ceremony Dec. 17 at Manassas Cemetery

The public is invited to attend a wreath-laying ceremony Dec. 17 at noon at Manassas Cemetery. Local dignitaries, the Manassas City Police Color Guard and bagpipe, and others will present a short program including the laying of the wreaths. This is part of the Wreaths Across America movement.

Pearl Harbor exhibit opens Dec. 7; first time model on public display - 20 years in the making

National Museum of the United States Navy will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in a special "Valor in the Pacific: A Remembrance" exhibition opening Dec. 7, 2016. For more than 20 years, historian Rev. Todd Hammond has researched and worked on an 8' x 12' model covering approximately five square miles of Oahu as was on the eve of the attack. This is the first time the model will be on public display.

Va. Tech cadet from Bristow leads Corps of Cadets’ fundraising for National D-Day Memorial

A little bit of history came to life for Cadet Brooke Edwards of Bristow, as she collected donations for the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. The Sept. 17 effort raised $4,933.13 for the memorial site.

Veterans now eligible for new USDA commodity trader apprenticeship program

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has begun a new jobs program that will use the national apprenticeship system to hire new employees as agricultural commodity graders. USDA hopes many veterans will apply. Curriculum has been approved by DOL and VA, and enrolled veterans qualify for VA benefits.

About 18,000 veterans hired in program’s first year; goal was 10,000 in three years

Governor Terry McAuliffe Sept. 28 recognized businesses for their ongoing commitment to creating employment opportunities for Virginia’s veterans at the Virginia Workforce conference, hosted by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. The 669 Virginia businesses certified under the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program hired over 18,000 veterans, doubling the private sector commitment in a year.
