Fatal crash numbers rose during the 2017 Fourth of July weekend, and nearly half of the motorists killed in those crashes were not wearing a seat belt, according to a July 5 report from Virginia State Police. During the four-day statistical counting period, preliminary numbers report a total of nine deaths compared to eight in 2016.

Dr. Thomas Jefferson Grizzard Jr., 70, retired director of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory, and a volunteer member of the Manassas City Utilities Committee, died on Saturday, June 24, at an area hospital from injuries sustained during a June 21 bicycle accident, according to a Manassas City police report.
