Hands-on learning took on a new dimension this year for dozens of students who designed and installed wildlife habitats on school grounds. Habitat plantings are slightly different than pollinator gardens or vegetable gardens, in that they incorporate native plants to provide yearlong shelter and food for a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, native bees, dragonflies, amphibians, and reptiles.

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) has authorized Dominion Energy Virginia to construct a new 230-kilovolt electric transmission line and a new substation in Prince William County and the Town of Haymarket that will follow the Carver Road route, according to an SCC press release issued late Friday, June 23.

Jarrett Lash and Hanhbee Lee, juniors at the Governor’s School @ Innovation Park in Manassas and who also attend Patriot High School in Nokesville, took second place honors at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) with their design for a new way to capture solar energy by mimicking the natural process of photosynthesis--how plants convert sunlight to energy.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted unanimously June 1 at a special meeting to deny Dominion Virginia Power access to build an overhead transmission line across property at Somerset Crossing, which is protected by an Open-Space Easement held by the county.

Single lane closures will occur along northbound Route 29 between Lucas Court and Carver Road in Gainesville in the Lake Manassas area the nights of Monday, May 8 through Wednesday, May 10 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night for drainage pipe replacement, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
