Wreath laying ceremony Dec. 17 at Manassas Cemetery

Manassas Lioness Lions Club along with the United Daughters of the Confederacy reports that they have added Manassas Cemetery on Center Street to the Wreaths Across America’s list, like Arlington and Quantico. On Saturday, Dec. 17 at noon, these cemeteries along with more than 1000 across our country will be holding a ceremony to honor our fallen heroes at the same time.

Beginning in1992, the Worcester family, owners of the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington Maine, began laying wreaths at the Arlington National Cemetery. Because of the growing interest across the country after seeing pictures of the wreaths placed at Arlington, the family along with veterans and other groups, formed Wreaths Across America organization in 2007. They have since added over 1100 other locations in this country and beyond.

The public is invited to attend this commemoration ceremony. Local dignitaries, the Manassas City Police Color Guard and bagpipe, and others will present a short program including the laying of the wreaths. There are marked stones from several conflicts and there is a large monument for the unknown heroes numbering over 211 in the back portion.

The Whitt’s Harley Davidson, which is next door at 9321 Center Street, has offered for attendees to park in its back lot nearest to the cemetery.
