World Trade Center Steel Comes to PWC

Four pieces of steel from the wreckage of the 9/11 World Trade Center collapse were trucked in to Prince William County June 16. Prince William County Police rode as an escort to the truck through the County, where the convoy stopped at the Sean T. Connaughton Plaza at the Prince William Government Complex. County police officers and others were able to take close-up looks at the steel.

After a brief ceremony, the artifacts were taken to the Public Safety Training Center in Nokesville where they will stay for awhile. A design competition is planned to let people submit ideas of where and how the pieces will ultimately be displayed in the community, according to a County press release.
“This is a piece of American history. The citizens of Prince William County for generations to come will have an opportunity to reach out and touch the steel and reflect on how Sept. 11, 2001 changed our world forever,” said Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. He said he is “confident we will ultimately have a striking, lasting memorial that will proudly honor the men and women who serve our nation and our communities.”
Two of the pieces are 22-feet long; the other two are 19-feet and almost-19-feet long. They weigh between 11,000 lbs. and 18,500 lbs.
