Workshop series on special education in PWC schools

PWCS Office of Special Education Parent Resource Center is hosting a series of evening workshops for parents, educators, and community members on the special education process. Interested persons can attend one, two, or all three sessions. All sessions of this series will take place from 7–9 p.m. in room 1101 A & B at the Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. View the flyer.

Tuesday, October 4, “Understanding Special Education: School Intervention, Referral, Evaluation, and Eligibility” - Participants will learn about the school intervention process, how a student is referred for a comprehensive special education evaluation, the evaluation process, and how special education law finds a student with a disability eligible to receive special education services.

Tuesday, October 11, “Understanding Special Education: Parents as Partners in the IEP Process” - Participants will learn the components of the IEP document and how to be an active participant in the IEP process.

Tuesday, October 18, “Understanding Special Education: Parental Rights in Dispute Resolution” - Participants will learn the “appropriate chain of command” for rectifying problems that arise with regard to a child’s special education services and gain an understanding of the options for dispute resolution available to parents and schools, which include central office review, state mediation, and due process hearing.

Individuals requiring accommodations such as sign or foreign language interpreter services are asked to preregister by 4:30 p.m. one week prior to the scheduled workshop.

Staff can earn six state recertification points by attending all three workshops in the series. PWCS staff members should register through the online Professional Learning Catalog.
