Week recognizes public-safety telecommunicators who take emergency calls at 9-1-1

Public-safety telecommunicators are the first people you speak to on your worst day. These professionals are dedicated, knowledgeable, empathetic and patient. Although hidden from public view, they have chosen this career for the opportunity to make a difference every day.

By Act of Congress to the second full week of April each year is dedicated the people who serve as public safety telecommunicators – the first contact that residents have when public-safety assistance is needed. This year the week is April 8-14.

This week is a time to honor all telecommunicators who answer the calls for help while providing emergency assistance to the public and to first responders, said Eddie L. Reyes, director of the Office of Public Safety Communications. The Police and Fire & Rescue departments jointly administer the agency.

Residents may wish to recognize and thank the great group of professionals who make sure your 9-1-1 calls are answered; provide aid, comfort and pre-arrival instructions; and dispatch needed police and fire & rescue responders during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week April 8-14.
