Virginia governor invites residents to “make a difference” during Earth Week

Governor Terry McAuliffe urged his fellow Virginians to celebrate Earth Week by getting involved in a number of environmentally-based special programs and volunteer projects being offered in Virginia State Parks, April 17-25.

“Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the enormous natural resources that make Virginia great,” said Governor McAuliffe. “It is also a chance to help preserve and enhance our Commonwealth’s environment by getting involved in an environmental service project near your own community.”

All 36 Virginia State Parks will offer special programming or volunteer projects related to preserving the environment, recycling, upcycling, developing natural habitats or beautifying parks. Other projects include habitat creation for the threatened Monarch Butterfly, weeding, trail maintenance and plantings.

Many volunteer opportunities are part of the Spring Stewardship Virginia Campaign and participants will receive a certificate from Governor McAuliffe for participating.

A list of programs and volunteer opportunities can be found at: http://bit.ly/EarthWeek2015.

The governor himself will celebrate Earth Day at Pocahontas State Park outside Richmond by participating in a native habitat construction project.
