Victim shot in abdomen after verbal altercation escalates in Dumfries; accused held without bond

Aggravated Malicious Wounding | Domestic Related – On March 1 at 1:05AM, officers responded to a residence located in the 15700 block of Cranberry Ct. in Dumfries (22025) to investigate a shots fired call, according to Off. Renee Carr, police department representative.

Off. Carr said the victim, a 27-year-old woman, reported to police that she and an acquaintance, identified as the accused, were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated. During the encounter, the accused brandished a firearm and pointed the weapon towards the victim which prompted other family members to intervene. The altercation continued and the accused fired a round, striking the victim in the abdominal area.

Family members were able to separate the gun from the accused and contacted the police. The victim was flown to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Responding officers immediately detained the accused and secured the firearm, Off. Carr said. The accused reported minor injuries sustained during the initial family intervention. Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Walter Alvin BASKERVILLE, was arrested.

Charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony
