SUNDAY, JANUARY 5 - WINTER STORM WARNING
VDOT Northern Virginia District crews will be staging and ready for heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures that are forecast to impact the region tonight through Monday.
Residents are asked to be in place and off of the roads by this afternoon and be aware of the potential for icy spots as freezing temperatures remain through much of the week. Please keep in mind there will be a multi-day response to this storm as VDOT works to make the roads passable.
What’s The Latest
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for VDOT’s Northern Virginia District and much of Virginia. Snowfall amounts of 6-11 inches are currently forecast by the National Weather Service. Snowfall amount potential can be found on their winter weather page. Please monitor forecasts closely for updates.
Northern Virginia District crews pretreated interstates, primaries, and high-volume secondary roads, along with bridges, ramps, and overpasses with salt brine Saturday. Crews will stage on area roads today and will begin treatment as snow begins this evening and tonight.
Do your best to get to your destination midday into afternoon today before the snow begins. But if you must go out, make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies and give space to first responders and VDOT crews while they are out staging on area roads. Familiarize yourself with these winter driving tips.
Do not travel when snow begins later this evening into tonight. Give our crews the greatest ability to make area roads passable by limiting all non-essential travel across Northern Virginia. Please be mindful of response equipment staged on the side of the road earlier today and give them plenty of room.
Be prepared for a multi-day response to this storm. VDOT treats roads to make them passable in priority order, with interstates first, then primaries, high-volume secondaries, and finally residential streets.
Please keep in mind the Northern Virginia District has 17,000+ residential streets to treat so heavy snowfall may result in the necessity for multiple passes.
