VDOT probing mishap with road stripes at Centreville
CENTREVILLE—The temporary pavement markings that peeled from the roadway and created confusion on the eastbound I-66 bridge over US 29 have been replaced and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is now focusing on what went wrong, according to a news release.
A sample of the tape used to stripe the lanes is being sent to a VDOT lab for testing. “It is unclear whether the tape was damaged, it was applied incorrectly or if heavy rain played a role in the tape peeling away,” said Bill Cuttler, district engineer for construction in northern Virginia. “We will get to the bottom of what happened so we can prevent a future occurrence.”
The markings were installed on Aug. 15 as part of a temporary lane shift that will last three more weeks. The $2 million project to rehabilitate the I-66 bridges over Route 29 will be complete this fall.
