Prince William County government recently issued a report on the status of 16 local transportation projects.
Western Prince William
• Burwell Road-Fitzwater Drive Improvements: Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative has relocated all of its utilities. Verizon facilities relocations are underway. Due to the relocations, the start date may be affected. Construction will follow the relocations with completion slated for June 2016.
• Va. 28 Phase I – Linton Hall Road to Vint Hill Road: 85 percent of the subbase for realigning Vint Hill Road is complete. Blasting operations and waterline placements are complete; and 85 percent of the sound walls on Va. 28 are installed. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2016.
• Va. 28 Phase II – Fitzwater Drive to Vint Hill Road: Final design plans are in for the Virginia Department of Transportation to review and utility relocation has begun. The Va. 28 Phase II and the extension of Vint Hill Road will be combined into one contract and 30 percent of the plans are scheduled to be submitted to VDOT by August 2016.
• Logmill Road Improvements: Construction to realign Logmill Road started in September. There is a detour in place. Rights-of-way negotiations with one property owner are ongoing. Residents have been updated with the project’s status. Construction is expected to be complete in August 2016.
Central Prince William
• Hellwig Park Entrance Improvement: The parking lot paving is complete and 90 percent of the entrance relocation activities are finished. Prince William County’s Department of Parks and Recreation will coordinate and manage the design of the parking lot lighting system. Design plans for a sanitary sewer connection has been approved by the Prince William Service Authority. Verizon is relocating utility lines and should be finished this month.
• Minnieville Road – Spriggs Road to Va. 234: All rights-of-way offers have been sent to property owners, and 21 of 66 property owners have accepted county offers to purchase the rights-of-way or easements. A construction advertisement is scheduled to go out in January 2016 with a construction award scheduled for June 2016.
• Purcell Road Improvements: Utility relocation and clearing are expected to begin this month. Construction is scheduled to be completed no later than Oct. 31, 2016.
Eastern Prince William
• Gideon Drive Sidewalk between Dale Boulevard and Opitz Boulevard: Construction is 95 percent complete and placement of the retaining wall has started. The sidewalk is scheduled to open to foot traffic this month.
• Antietam Road Sidewalk: Plans have been submitted to VDOT for final review. Comments, if any, are expected from VDOT in January 2016. Rights-of-way purchases are expected to be complete in January 2016. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2016.
• Fuller Road-Fuller Heights Road at Quantico Marine Corps Base Entrance: VDOT has authorized the county to begin rights-of-way acquisitions. The base has restarted the project and has shared 65 percent of the project plans with the county. The base is expected to have 100 percent of the plans ready for construction bids by the spring of 2016. Construction advertisements are contingent on the base granting easement and utility relocations and awarding its portion of a contract.
• Blackburn Road Sidewalk: Rights-of-way and easement acquisitions are underway. The county is coordinating with Verizon on utility relocation. Comments from VDOT are expected this month and construction is scheduled to begin in November 2016.
• U.S. 1 – Featherstone Road to Mary’s Way: Design for storm water management is ongoing as is the preparation for an environmental impact study. Traffic analysis is ongoing and design waiver requests have been sent to VDOT for review. Preliminary road plans have been submitted to VDOT. A citizen information meeting will be held the first quarter of 2016.
• U.S. 1 – Neabsco Mills Road to Featherstone Road: The project is divided into three phases with construction occurring simultaneously. Phase I – Neabsco Mills Road to Dale Boulevard, Phase II – Dale Boulevard to Delaware Drive, and Phase III – Delaware Drive to Featherstone Road are all under construction. Traffic signals at Blackburn Road and Dale Boulevard have been installed. Phase I, between Dale Boulevard and Blackburn Road, is complete with final completion of all three phases scheduled for June 2016.
• Va. 234-U.S. 1 Turn Lane Modification: Construction has begun on the $2.4-million project with completion set for the fall of 2016.
• Powell’s Creek Pedestrian Footbridge: The project is currently in the design phase. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2016. Completion is set for November 2016.
• Old Bridge Sidewalk: The Prince William Department of Transportation has signed an agreement with VDOT and funds for the $692,700 project have been approved by the board. Authorization to begin design is expected in January or February 2016.
