Upcoming PWCS special education workshops designed to answer questions

The PWCS Office of Special Education Parent Resource Center is hosting evening workshops for parents, educators, and community members on the special education process.  The workshops will take place from 7–9 p.m. in room 1101 A & B at the Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas.

Thursday, October 17 — “Understanding Special Education: Parents as Partners in the IEP Process”

Learn the components of the IEP document and how to be an active participant in the IEP process. Robin Blaemire, administrative coordinator, Office of Special Education, will present.

Thursday, October 24 — “Understanding Special Education: Parental Rights in Dispute Resolution”

Learn the “appropriate chain of command” for rectifying problems that arise with regard to a child’s special education services. Gain an understanding of the options for dispute resolution available to parents and schools, which include central office review, state mediation, and due process hearing. Chrystal Thompson, administrative coordinator, Office of Special Education, will present.

There is no charge for attending the workshops; however, preregistration is required. Individuals requiring accommodations, such as sign or foreign language interpreter services, are asked to preregister by 4:30 p.m. one week prior to the scheduled workshop.

Staff can earn six state recertification points by attending all three workshops in the series. PWCS staff members should register online through the electronic register.
