Join KPWB, the Arbor Day Foundation, and AWS InCommunities for a tree planting and giveaway on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers will be planting trees throughout the Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park, while 50 trees will be given to community members on a first come, first serve basis. The tree giveaway will take place near the parking lot located at the corner of Iron Bridge Unit Avenue and Tenth Alabama Way in Bristow, just off Bristow Road.
Tree species will include Dogwoods, Redbuds, and Sweetbay Magnolias, a news release said.
Bristoe Station Park is within the Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area buffer. Buffers serve as filters for overland (sheet flow) stormwater, allowing water to infiltrate the soils and treat nitrogen, phosphorous, and suspended solids carrying pollutants before they reach streams. As with all reforesting, we will be restoring the land to its natural landform and creating habitat for wildlife.
According to the KPWB news release, “Due to these tree planting efforts, Bristoe Station has become a more attractive birding location; there’s been a notable increase in the diversity of bird species breeding, residing, and migrating through the area.
KPWB describes its mission as “an environmental non-profit devoted to environmental sustainability in Prince William County, including litter prevention and removal, community beautification and programs.”
