TODAY’S COLUMN - Unlimited opportunities unfolding at Prince William County Schools

The summer went quickly.

Doors opened on Aug. 31 at 95 Prince William County Public Schools. Sights will differ depending on where you look. Just be sure to take in the important big picture-the unlimited opportunities unfolding for nearly 87,000 PWCS students.

You can see amazing potential etched on the faces of every child who passes through our doors. It is there whether they are cool teens who have “seen it all before,” or kindergarteners, nervous to be away from home, but energized by every new experience. Our job as educators is to tap that endless potential and channel it toward a lifetime of learning and success.

More than 5,700 dedicated teachers, including nearly 750 new ones, are eager and able to make it happen.

For most, teaching is a calling; they have been preparing for years for the privilege of shaping young lives. They are fortunate to have help from hundreds of counselors, nurses, administrators, teaching assistants, bus drivers, custodians, curriculum specialists, and other support staff who share their dedication.

From the newly-completed Chris Yung Elementary, to recently refurbished schools, our buildings are ready. Once again these will be places where the seeds of knowledge and understanding are planted, and where possibilities bloom.

By now, some will have read enough. They might say, “Our schools are not everything they could be,” or insist that “test scores could be better.”

You will get no argument from me or any PWCS educator. Despite improving performance indicators, high parent satisfaction, and wonderful stories of student success, PWCS can always be better.

We are proud of the education our students receive, but will never be satisfied. Providing a World-Class Education is an elusive goal that we continually strive to reach.

Our collective efforts were on display August 31 and beyond. They will be enhanced by supportive parents and guardians, businesses, and political leaders.

Nearly 87,000 students will benefit.
