Three-year vehicle registration renewals are now being offered at Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) customer service centers and DMV Select offices.
However, three-year registration renewals are not available for residents who live in a Northern Virginia locality that requires emissions inspections. Because an emission inspection is only good for two years, residents in those areas can only renew their vehicle registration for one or two years at a time.
For the past several years, DMV has offered three-year registration renewals to online customers. During the last fiscal year, customers completed more than 71,000 three-year registration renewals online.
“This is yet another convenience we’re offering DMV customers,” DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb said. “Renewing online is your fastest option because it allows you to complete your transaction 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from the comfort of your own home. However, if you have to visit DMV for another transaction or if you prefer to do business in person, you can now renew your registration for three years and save yourself a little money and some time in the long run.”
Customers who renew their registration for two years receive a $2 discount while those who renew for three years get a $3 discount. If you renew online, you save an additional dollar.
The majority of customers renewing vehicle registrations are able to complete the transaction online. More than 30 different transactions are available at dmvNOW.com.
